Poker Betting Basics

The basic poker betting terms are the same for all online poker games, Bet, Call, Raise, Check and Fold. The only thing that is different when betting is how the "ante" or "blind" is posted by a player or players, to get the action started. Once the game has started here's what to do:

Bet
Betting at a pot means you are the first to bet in the current betting round, placing money into the pot. To bet indicates you are still included in the pot and are an active player.

Call
Calling a bet means that you are matching the current bet amount in the current betting round. To call the current bet indicates you are still included in the pot and are an active player.

Raise
Raising a bet means that you call the current bet and raise it to a higher amount. This higher amount will depend on the betting structure that you are playing, for example No-Limit or Pot limit. To raise the current bet indicates you are still included in the pot and are an active player.

Check
Checking a pot means that no one in the current betting round has made a bet or called a bet. To check the current bet indicates you are still included in the pot and are an active player.

Fold
Folding means you are out of the current hand. To fold indicates you are no longer included in the pot and are not an active player in this hand.

It is important that you make your move in turn. This is one of the core pieces of poker etiquette and if you move out of place you will annoy other player and it just bad manners, although to be fair in online poker you are not allowed to move out of sequence.
