When you play at an online casino you are playing against the house, the odds are tilted in the casinos favor, called the house edge, and this is how online casinos make money.
With online poker it is different; you play against other online poker players. So how does the poker room make money? Well they take a small percentage, usually between 3% and 5% from each pot.
This is called the Rake; Rake is taken from all real money games.
For tournaments it is slightly different in that poker rooms add a small amount to the tournaments buy in, usually 10%. So when you see a tournament advertised as $10+$1 the plus $1 is for the poker room. This applies to both Sit & Go's and Scheduled Tournaments.
