Antes and Blinds are used in poker to get the action moving. If no one had to put money in the pot to start with then you would wait for a pair of aces every time, well almost. With your money in the pot from an ante or blind your initial urge is to defend it thus creating action.
Antes
An ante is a forced bet made by all players before any cards are dealt. An ante doesn't count towards the first round of betting. Antes are used mostly in stud games, although they are used in non-stud tournaments in the later stages, to try increase the action.
Blinds (Big Blind and Small Blind)
A blind is a forced bet by 2 players before any cards are dealt. A blind counts towards the first round of betting. There are two blinds one called the big blind and is equal to the limit you are playing and a small blind that is usually half the big blind. In some No-Limit games the big and small blinds are the same.
